What is the difference between a connector-specific and a global rule?

When creating rules in Spotler Connect, you can customize their behavior. One of the available options is to apply a rule as global. This FAQ explains the difference between connector-specific rules and global rules.

Please note

Both incoming and outgoing rules can be made global.

In this article you will learn more about:

Connector-specific rules

By default, rules are connector-specific. This means that the rule only applies to data going to or coming from selected connectors. It's a useful way to adjust data behavior per connector—hence the name.

Connector-specific rules are often used to address quirks in external systems, such as converting data to customer-facing values or filling required fields that are frequently left empty in the source system. Examples are:

  • When Shipment provider is '1991', transform this to 'DHL same day delivery'
  • When Phone number is empty, fill field with 00310612345678

Global rules

Global rules apply to all active connectors in the account. However, they only affect connectors that handle the relevant data category. For example, if a global rule governs activity data, it will only impact connectors that transport activities.

Global rules are ideal for large-scale data transformations. They're commonly used to prevent the processing of incomplete data or to (pre)filter data based on criteria. Examples are:

  • When Email address is empty, stop processing data
  • If Meta Leadscore is below 50, stop processing data
  • When Order total is above 100.000, send a BCC email to info@mywebshop.com

How to create a global rule

Creating a global rule is straightforward. When setting up a new incoming or outgoing rule, activate the toggle under Make global rule. Once activated, the option to select specific connectors becomes disabled.

How to edit an existing rule

To change an existing rule into a global rule, put the rule into edit mode. Select Edit at the top right of the rule, switch the Make global rule toggle, and click Save at the top right.
